Touch is a co-project of the Embroiderers' Guild and ClearVision
lending library. The Embroiderers' Guild called thousands of embroiderers
and crafts people to stretch their skills and create unique tactile
books for visually impaired children. The competition intends to
generate hundreds of handmade 'tactile' books to stimulate and excite
young learners with little or no sight. Children will be able to
feel, stroke, pull, lift, shake, sniff, rattle, and squeak their
way through the story.
The Embroiderers'
Guild will donate all the entries to the ClearVision library and
the best will be exhibited at the Knitting and Stitching Shows 2002
in London, Harrogate and Dublin.
ClearVision
is a nationwide lending library providing opportunities for visually
impaired young learners to read books previously in accessible to
them. ClearVision books are borrowed by over 600 schools, public
libraries, resource bases, visual impairment services and individual
families throughout the UK.
The Embroiderers'
Guild is a leading UK charity, museum and membership association
for the promotion of embroidery. The Embroiderers' Guild strives
to encourage and support new talents in contemporary embroidery
and textile arts by organising such events as art of the STITCH,
open international biennial exhibition, and the Graduate Showcase
at The Knitting and Stitching Shows.
