Embroiderers' Guild Future of Design Award for Embroidery

The Embroiderers' Guild is delighted to take part in the Future of Designs Awards Scheme which will feature the Best of British graduate designers at the Business Design Centre, Islington from 4 - 14 July 2002.

As part of the Scheme the Embroiderers' Guild will be presenting the Future of Design Award for Embroidery of £1,000 to the graduate showing the most innovative and skilful use of embroidery in their work.

The award is intended to encourage innovative use of stitch in the composition, construction, manipulation or decoration of the work. The work may be in any media and the embroidery may be integrated with other techniques. In the winning work the embroidery will make a significant and appropriate contribution to the success of the design or meaning of the work.

The Embroiderers' Guild is the leading UK charity, museum and membership association for the promotion of embroidery. The Guild selects around 20 graduates at New Designers and degree shows around the UK to be part of the Embroiderers' Guild Graduate Showcase exhibition at The Knitting and Stitching Shows, held in London, Dublin and Harrogate in October and November 2002. The winner of the Embroiderers' Guild Future of Design Award will be invited to participate in the Graduate Showcase.

At New Designers 2002, the Embroiderers' Guild is also supporting 'One Year On 4 - 7 July, presented by the Crafts Council. 'One Year On' is an annual exhibition highlighting the work of a selected group of enthusiastic, innovative and original makers who have recently begun working independently. Included in the exhibition this year will be Embroiderers' Guild Scholar in 2001 Nahid Ghafoor, who will be talking about how the scholarship has helped her develop her professional practice after graduating last year. As part of it's support for 'One Year On' the Guild will be contributing to the seminar programme, a presentation on opportunities and support available to new makers through the Embroiderers' Guild, it's membership network and programme.
